Designed for Speed: Mizuno Alpha Elite FG Review
Mizuno's renowned Kangaroo leather wave boots are constantly developing new technologies, hoping to blend tradition and technology. The Mizuno Morelia Neo 3 Beta is a prime example, featuring a knit upper with a kangaroo leather toe cap. The boots are designed to be lightweight and flexible, and have impressed us with their excellent performance in reviews. At the end of last year, Mizuno also released a fully technologically advanced speed wave boot, named the Alpha, aiming to provide an unprecedented sense of speed and lightness.
The Boot I'm testing this time is the Alpha Elite, not the top-of-the-line Japanese version. Its upper features a Woven fabric with a visible Boot ribbed frame, intended to effectively secure the Boot's shape. Furthermore, the ribbed frame is also constructed with sponge, aiming to further secure the Boot to the foot. This design reminds me of Mizuno's previous Rebula, which was made of kangaroo leather with an elastic ribbed frame.
For the Alpha, they've applied technology to a thinner synthetic fabric. The outermost layer of the upper features a stickier texture, creating a slightly squishy feel. The Alpha Elite's tongue maintains a traditional, thin design. Another unique feature of the Alpha is its sockliner and inner heel, incorporating Zeroglide technology for a particularly squishy feel. Through this technology, Alpha aims to provide enhanced lockdown, allowing for more power and flexibility in rotation. The Alpha Elite utilizes Enerzy Foam, a cushioning technology used in Mizuno athletic shoes, on the stud sole. The Alpha Elite FG utilizes triangular studs for enhanced traction.
I've tested the Alpha Elite several times and am most pleased with the dribbling feel. I find the Alpha Elite offers a greater sense of flexibility. The slightly sticky upper allows me to steer the ball more easily without having to open the shoe, resulting in a smoother dribbling experience. Thanks to the thin, sticky upper, I feel my foot is very close to the ball when dribbling. Furthermore, the Alpha Elite's triangular studs provide aggressive traction. While I find the stronger traction on artificial grass can enhance agility and speed, I find the grip a bit too strong, placing more pressure on the ankle. For artificial grass, consider the AG option, which features denser, shorter, and rounder studs, significantly reducing the risk of injury.
I'm also very satisfied with the Alpha Elite's passing performance. Its thinner upper material allows for a comfortable, snug fit on short passes. Furthermore, the Alpha Elite's tacky upper, combined with its slightly protruding ribs, enhances the feel of the ball, comparable to the feel of a Boot. Long passes are even more effective with the Alpha Elite, making it incredibly easy to land a pass with the Boot. Thanks to its thinner upper, the Alpha Elite also offers ample power. Combined with the technology and materials used in the upper, the Alpha Elite makes it easier to deliver the desired pass. I also enjoy the Alpha's side-spin, where the added material enhances the feel and power of the ball.
Regarding shooting, Ah Xu found his inside-foot shots to be powerful, with the ribbed upper providing excellent grip and a surprising performance. The Alpha Elite's shots were sharper and more pronounced, creating a sense of effortless delivery. Regarding instep shots, Ah Xu found his tendency to produce more elusive shots, but the Alpha Elite was generally effective.
The Alpha Elite also has its drawbacks. Axel believes that the lower collar on both sides of the shoe makes it easier for imitation grass particles to fall into the boot. Furthermore, the lower collar reduces ankle protection, increasing the risk of injury. Furthermore, the Alpha Elite's thinner upper also reduces the boot's protection. While playing with it, Axel frequently encountered hard contact on defense. The Alpha Elite offered virtually no protection, leaving him with no alternative but to take the fight.
In summary, we believe the Alpha Elite is a truly innovative shoe from Mizuno. Their sophisticated woven synthetic leather, combined with their multi-layered technology, makes them a natural competitor to the Mercurial and X. Furthermore, the Alpha Elite's design is tailored to the Asian foot shape, with a medium to wide fit, making it a relatively rare shoe on the market. Regarding sizing, we believe the Alpha runs neither too big nor too small, so you should be able to choose your normal size.
