Barefoot Experience: Mizuno Morelia Neo 3 Beta Review

The Morelia Neo, Mizuno's speed-focused kangaroo leather series, has been upgraded to its third generation this year. This time, Mizuno will be testing the top-of-the-line version of the third generation: the Morelia Neo 3 Beta, a pair of Mizuno wave boots made in Japan. Like the second generation, the Morelia Neo 3 is available in two top-of-the-line versions: the regular version and the Beta. The Beta version utilizes Mizuno's latest technology, promising a more barefoot experience. So, how did it perform? Today, Mizuno will be testing the Morelia Neo 3 Beta.

The Morelia Neo 3 Beta is surprisingly lightweight for a kangaroo-skin boot. The toebox is constructed from high-quality, thinner kangaroo leather, but the higher toebox provides more space. Furthermore, to reduce weight, the back of the shoe features Mizuno's Barefoot Knit with a sock-like lacing system, ensuring a more comfortable fit. The heel is also constructed from suede, with a concave heel. The studs remain the same: 12 round studs, complemented by specially designed studs at the ball of the foot.

I've worn the Morelia Neo 3 Beta in several friendly matches, and what impressed me most was its comfort. The Morelia Neo 3 Beta offers a lightweight and comfortable feel, enhanced significantly by the soft, pliable kangaroo leather. Combined with the thinner kangaroo leather, the knit material, and the sock-like design, the technology ensures a comfortable, snug fit, just as Mizuno intended: a barefoot feel.

Furthermore, the Morelia Neo 3 Beta offers a high-quality dribbling experience. Its shape is more refined than the traditional Morelia, perfectly fitting the shape of the boot. Combined with thinner kangaroo leather and knit materials, the Morelia Neo 3 Beta delivers an ideal sense of speed and agility, a rarity in kangaroo leather boots. Lockdown is also excellent, yet it's scratch-free. Furthermore, the Morelia Neo 3 Beta utilizes short, round studs, making it ideal for Hong Kong's grass pitches and medium- to high-quality artificial turf.

Passing and control are also areas where I'm particularly impressed, especially with long passes. The thinner upper, crafted from high-quality kangaroo leather, provides an ideal feel for long passes. The Wave Boot offers a traditional passing feel, while the thinner upper provides a more comfortable fit, making precise passes easier. The texture is softer, while the power is average. On short passes, the thinner upper provides a smoother, more fluid feel. Control is ideal, though. I have to admit, the Morelia Neo 3 Beta offers a very strong barefoot feel, with a noticeable feel in control. However, I would have preferred the feel of a thicker leather.

Shooting is a weak point for the Morelia Neo 3 Beta, but again, this is because it performs well in all other areas. I prefer the Morelia Neo 3 Beta's inside-foot shooting. The kangaroo leather toe cap provides an ideal feel for the shot, and the thinner upper makes inside-foot shots more powerful. As for instep shots, the performance is good, but the power isn't great, especially considering the lighter and thinner feel of the Boot.

The Morelia Neo 3 Beta's release was a pleasant surprise. We consider them a high-quality pair of kangaroo leather boots, especially for those who prefer the traditional feel of kangaroo leather but also desire a touch of speed. However, the Morelia Neo 3 Beta also has its drawbacks: the kangaroo leather is thinner, resulting in less protection.

As for the size, due to the thinness of the kangaroo leather and the higher toe box, A-Shoes recommends choosing a half size smaller. As for the shoe shape, the Morelia Neo 3 Beta is a mid-foot shape, but due to the kangaroo leather, the shoe will adapt to the foot over time. A-Shoes believes that it will also be suitable for those with medium to wide feet.
